Fox Talbot (Dorset, 11 February 1800 – Lacock, Wiltshire, 17 September 1877) was a British inventor (among other things) and photography pioneer who invented the calotype, a  negative/positive process that eventually succeeded as the basis for almost all 19th and 20th century photography. The daguerreotype, a positive process without a negative, more complicated and with less quality copies, developed at the same time, was rarely used by photographers after 1860 and had died as a commercial process by 1865.
